2022 CMA Health Summit Series: Facing the health workforce challenge

Health care workers are the foundation that keeps the Canadian health system standing. Increasingly, that foundation is at risk of collapse as more health care professionals retire or leave their respective professions due to exhaustion, burnout or dissatisfaction. Join Dr. Verna Yiu, former CEO of Alberta Health Services, as she shares insights on the toll the workforce shortage has had on staffing levels and patient care in this country, and what actions are needed to face the health human resource challenge head on.

Our multiprofessional panel – featuring a family doctor, nurse, medical resident, and social worker and patient advocate – will bring forward innovative strategies for supporting a more agile workforce. How do we recruit, train and retain the number of care professionals needed to ensure better health outcomes for all Canadians?

CMA President Dr. Katharine Smart will moderate a 30-minute Q&A session before participants attend smaller breakout sessions to brainstorm on actions.

The CMA unites physicians who believe in a better future of health. Our vision is a sustainable, accessible health system where patients are partners; communities where everyone has the chance to be healthy; and a new culture of medicine that elevates physician wellbeing and embraces equity and diversity.
