Pluriversal Design SIG Book Club 14: BEFORE MAN: Sylvia Wynter's Rewriting of the Modern Episteme

Welcome to the Pluriversal Design SIG’s BookClub! In this Book Club, we focus on the works of authors from all over the ‘pluriverse’. We intentionally focus on the works of authors from Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, and Asia. In our discussions, we discuss how these works impact us as designers.

For this book club, Dr. Mariana Braga introduced the work of Jamaican author and cultural theorist, Sylvia Wynter, referencing an article by Denise Ferreira.

About the book: Wynter’s work combines insights from the natural sciences, the humanities, art, and anti-colonial struggles in order to unsettle what she refers to as the “overrepresentation of Man.”

Da Silva, Denise Ferreira. “BEFORE MAN: Sylvia Wynter’s Rewriting of the Modern Episteme.” In Sylvia Wynter: On Being Human as Praxis, edited by McKittrick Katherine, 90-105. Durham; London: Duke University Press, 2015.

About the author: Sylvia Wynter is a Jamaican author and cultural theorist.

About the presenter: Dr. Mariana Braga is currently a Post-Doctoral Research Associate International in ImaginationLancaster at Lancaster University. Throughout her career, she also developed skills to help non-expert groups integrate design approaches (design thinking, strategic design, product-service systems, design-driven innovation) into their organizations and with communities.

Date of event: October 1st, 2021
